NHS Family Activity Day

Members from IoERC joined the fun at an activity day organised by The Children’s Cancer Team at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge to promote the health and wellbeing of children currently being treated or recently treated for cancer or other haematological disorders.

This inaugural event, held at Cambridge Rugby Club, was a huge success and it was wonderful to see patients and their siblings having fun.  The day centred on several organisations bringing specialist equipment so that the children could try new sports, such as rowing, cycling, football and tennis. There were also new experiences on offer, such as messy play and gardening, as well as science and arts activities.

IoERC were joined by CUBC and many of the children enjoyed having a go in Edons and on ergs, and several of them were clearly interested in taking up rowing as a sport in the future. Massive thanks to two of our junior rowers, Grace and Emily, and senior rowers Dylan, Simon, Katie and Trevor for helping out on the day.

Bringing together children and their families who have endured cancer or haematological disorders seemed enormously beneficial, allowing shared experiences and providing a sense of community to what otherwise can be a very lonely journey. All children who took part went home with a medal, as well as all the ice cream they had time to eat!
