Six of us from IoERC took part in the British Rowing Tour from 29 Aug – 1 Sept 24. The route was from Bablock Hythe to Mapledurham on the River Thames in Oxfordshire, covering about 70 km and 12 locks.
Approximately 85 people took part from rowing clubs all over the country and the shared experiences brought us all together, with many new friendships made.
We rowed in coxed Charles Stanley boats (some of which were borrowed from IoERC) and they were excellent touring boats. The gentle pace allowed us to take in the beautiful countryside, wildlife and admire some stunning homes and gardens.
We rotated seats around the boats and became more accomplished at navigating the locks. We also learned how to land at some unusual sites, which meant we needed water shoes at the ready. There were volunteers and Environment Agency staff at each lock, on hand if anyone needed. We had great guidance from the organisers and support team throughout the brilliantly managed trip.
