Tyne Sculling Camp 2026
Four scullers from IOERC attended a masters single sculling camp at Tyne United Rowing Club this July. Andrew went to camp one, Cathie, Nadia and Pete, camp two.
The camps were run by knowledgeable and experienced coaches, who have also competed at a high level. We were split into groups of four, with similar ability scullers and assigned a coach per group. Each of the four days were structured and commenced at 7 am with a delicious breakfast, followed by elevenses and a two-course lunch. We were encouraged to take on extra calories to sustain us for the day ahead, and chat to people that we didn’t know – all very convivial.
Our first job was to help carry the coaches launches and engines down many steps to the tidal River Tyne. Wellies a must because of the mud and fluctuating water levels!
Our days were a mixture of technical exercises, coached rows and video analysis. On day 3 we all had an opportunity to take part in ‘the long bridges row’ – a 22k journey to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge – this was super well organised to keep everyone safe. We also had fun races on the final day and stretching classes each afternoon. All helped each other carrying sculling boats to the river and launching.
We returned home tired, but grateful for being able to spend time with such a wonderfully kind and helpful bunch of rowing enthusiasts. We can’t wait to put our coaching tips and exercises into practice at our beloved IOERC.
