Success at St Ives Regatta
The club took eleven crews to St Ives RC regatta (Sunday 19th June) for 9 divisions of 550m sprints on a twisty course. It was a great, if wet day out and the club was well represented with crews from juniors, masters plus crews from the last development squad. Notably, we entered our first competitive entry from the Ely College group with a J14 4x+ coxed by Maisie.
The day started not so well, with the men’s 4x burying itself in a tree after the start and the men’s 2x finding the bank shortly after. Prospects started to improve for IoE when Nick Johnson won his masters F 1x semi, then won his final. Further success came with Andrew Bateman winning his 1x race (first pot since 1984!), and Isobel Elsey producing a 3 length win in her 1x final – a massive pay off for the work she’s put in at the gym and on the water. Isobel’s mum Emma, Susan K, Susan M and Ann won their 4x final by an impressive 2 lengths.
The men’s 4+ final was a drag race between squad members of the Ely men’s 8 crew, with Rodney coxing Donald Ramsey and Katie coxing our ex CUBC 4+. The crew of ‘the Donald’ graciously gave up their 3 second handicap advantage but, in the end, Rodney’s crew (Howard, Simon, Trevor, Martin) prevailed over Katie’s crew (Patrick, Joe, Sam, Akif) by a length to take the win.
It was such a good day with all aspects of the club mixing together, helping each other prepare boats and supporting the racing. A big thank you to William for towing the trailer and everyone who came to help and support the racing.
We’ve got the bit between our teeth for racing now so keep an eye out for details of the next events.
The winning men’s 4+ (l-r) Martin, Howard, Simon, Rodney (cox) and Trevor.
Isobel Elsey, winner of the WJ16 1x event.
