Millie sculling at the Junior Championships

Junior Championships success

17-18 July saw Isle of Ely sculler Millie Hurrell compete in the WJ16 1x at the British Rowing Junior Championships in Nottingham. There were 29 entries from around the country from the Isle of Wight to Edinburgh. Millie’s first 6-lane competition started with a 1500m time trial on Saturday, and her 6th place ensured a spot in the A final. On Sunday, an excited group of junior supporters in Ely watched via the live stream as Millie put in another excellent row in the final to maintain her position. A fantastic result for Millie.

Millie’s success follows wins for sculler Katie Jugg in the WJ17 1x at the Cambridge Small Boats Head and the Cambridge Winter League, and for Isobel Elsey in the WJ16 1x at St Ives regatta.

It is not always easy in a small club, where opportunities to get out on the water and indoor training facilities may be limited, to compete against better-resourced larger clubs and independent schools.  This small group of technically competent scullers has shown that good coaching, dedication and commitment to training throughout the year both in the gym and on the water is key. Their support for each other and their friendly rivalry has pushed them on.

The Junior coaching team is delighted with what they have achieved so far and we are excitedly looking forward to the rest of the summer regatta season.
