We all have our own reasons to keep training at home, whether it's for fitness, stamina, strength, mental wellbeing or just something to fill the time during lockdown, but one of our members has an impending international competition to motivate her.
Nicki Glen is a real homegrown talent, learning to row with the club in 2013. Since then she has become an important member of the women's sweep rowing squad and a keen sculler.
Nicki has been a regular medal winner at the British Rowing Indoor Championship since her first attempt in 2018. That first year she won a gold medal in the 2000m, a silver medal followed in 2019 and, in the virtual event held in December 2020, she won gold medals in both the 2000m and 500m distance.
When Nicki won her gold medals she also qualified to compete in the World Rowing Indoor Championships. There are five continental champions for each race plus open qualifications; Nicki is the champion for the Continent of Europe in the women's 60-64 age category. Because of the Covid-19 restrictions this event will also be held virtually.
Nicki's race will be on the 24th February at 1.45pm and will be live-streamed from the World Rowing website https://worldrowing.com/ and the World Rowing Youtube channel.
The club wishes Nicki good luck for the race on the 24th.
