It is with great sadness that we report that Martin Whitworth, our President since 2004, died peacefully at home in Woodbridge on 7 September 2016.
Martin rowed at 4 for Cambridge in the 1944 Boat Race held in Ely. On that occasion he was in the losing boat but he got his revenge the following year, this time at stroke, when the race was held at Henley.
The 60th Anniversary of the 1944 race was celebrated here in Ely in 2004 with Martin as one of the honoured guests. When, during the festivities, he heard of the idea of starting a local rowing club he was immediately enthusiastic. Thereafter his interest never waned and in recognition of this he was unanimously elected President.
An engineer by profession, Martin loved all things mechanical, particularly his 1935 Lagonda in which he took great pride. In our early days whenever Martin paid us a visit it was always by means of this highly polished blue conveyance!
He was also very proud of his position as President of IoERC and would very loudly announce himself as such at any opportunity! Latterly, although his activity was limited by decreasing mobility, he continued to support the Club whenever possible and many of you will recall his attendance, in spite of the February rain and cold, at the film about our origins in the Cathedral last year.
Martin leaves children David and Christine and grandchildren Jack and Ralph and we send them all our deepest sympathy.
