Welcome to the 2016 Great Ouse Marathon

Well, last year’s race exceeded all our expectations – 160 crews took part. That was up over 60% on the previous year, and created a critical mass such that we were able to offer 26 boat / crew categories with “3 or more in a category” to race for pots!

Comments from last year’s competitors makes us think we might have even greater interest this year. However, old hands will know that the start is in a rural area with narrow roads, and the critical factor is car parking at the start. We don’t want this to become a problem which restricts the race in future years, so a couple of thoughts from the race organisers to help manage it:

  1. We haven’t put a limit on the number of entries, but will monitor number and type of entries (managing 160 single sculls would present a different challenge to 160 eights); and we may have to close entries early if numbers surge again in 2016. So – to avoid disappointment, please get your entry in early, particularly large boats and clubs with multiple crews.

  2. We are exploring extra / alternative parking with a local landowner, and will send out detailed arrangements nearer the time. But – please take careful note of arrangements when you get them, and help us avoid any problems with the local community. Also please give yourself a bit extra time at the start to allow for this.

We look forward to welcoming old friends and new crews on 4 September. For all the latest news sign up to our mailing list below and follow us on twitter @ioerc

Best wishes

About us

We are a relatively new club founded in 2004.  The club was born out of the Diamond44 celebrations which marked the 60th anniversary of the 1944 University Boat Race rowed at Ely. The Club colours, dark blue for Oxford and light blue for Cambridge, symbolise this connection. We serve Ely and the area north of Cambridge
